The PPA were the very first of our clients to embrace virtual events, and we delivered the first Virtual PPA Awards on the 30 June 2020.
Case studies are few and far between currently, as the event industry is only just emerging form an enforced slumber. But we are currently working on several virtual projects, which we hope to share with you soon.
So, let’s take a closer look at this PPA Event. The PPA Awards 2020 was due to take place at the Grosvenor House Hotel with an in-person audience of 800.
However, due to event restrictions, the ceremony took the form of an online-only event on June 30. The event was deemed to be hugely successful; the audience was larger than expected, the feedback was incredibly positive and the client was over the moon. The stars speak for themselves; There were 1,235 total unique attendees from 318 different companies across the course of the streamed ceremony, with an average ‘watch time’ of 1 hour 6 minutes (the ceremony lasted 1 hour 10 minutes). There were more than 67,000 page views across the PPA Awards website for the duration of the PPA Awards campaign. This includes a 76% increase in page visits in June in comparison to June 2019.
#PPAAwards trended on Twitter during and after the show – fifth in the UK (between Boris and Kanye!) and the social reach resulted in more than 161,000 impressions across Twitter and Instagram over the week of the Awards.
The PPA said “The feedback from attendees has been overwhelmingly positive and we have come out of this experience confident that, should the future require it, we can pull off virtual and hybrid events successfully with the right partners on board”
High-end production, a sense of ‘live’, a slick functional portal, and registration wall were deemed to be the most important elements from the outset. The PPA had been using the Evessio platform previously for their event websites, facilitation of awards, entries, judging and ticketing, and the team at Evessio has made moves to facilitate online events into their platform. So partnering with them to create a page on the PPA event site to host the live streamed awards was painless.
White Space Creative Solutions produced the show content and streaming solution. We have a team who are experienced in live-streaming to TV, as well as live events, so it was an easy transitioning them into delivering a 100% virtual Event. We recommended that we assembled a small core crew together to film the show in our studios in Colchester, along with the addition of being able to go live to guest presenters who could stay safely at home if need be. White Space filmed and curated the content live, using a TriCaster system, and streamed direct to the Evessio site using uswitch.tv. The live stream page also contained a moderated curated social media feed which was provided by CrowdScreen.
The PPA decided against using a celebrity host and PPA MD, Owen Meredith did the majority of the hosting. To introduce a live element to the event, Lucie Cave, Editorial Director at Bauer Media, took on the task of ‘Virtual Red Carpet Correspondent’ to pull in live social media posts and provide that all important audience engagement. The Voice of God was supplied by Lee Warren and was pre-recorded as separate audio files which were then placed into the show reel with imagery timed to his vocal cues.
The audience were encouraged to interact during the live show by competitions with prizes, with the Virtual Red Carpet Correspondent Lucie Cave, pulling in screenshots of tweets and Instagram posts live throughout the show. Also, teams were encouraged to set up their own Zoom chats while watching, even a sweepstake document was produced that the audience could download.
